"Stevic was the first guitarist to truly push the envelope of what this technology can do, often making Variax do things that hadn't even occurred to us!"

Marcus Ryle

Line 6 Co-Founder

  • My journey with Line 6 was an unplanned one. As an early adopter of the Line 6 Pod 2.0, I quickly became a digital modelling evangelist due to its unparalleled versatility and found myself demonstrating the tech for the Australian Line 6 distributor. An unconventional promotional video I made for Line 6 set the stage for a long-term relationship with the company. When Line 6 announced a guitar capable of mimicking 25 different, customisable guitars and offering 60 custom tunings, I was immediately on board.

  • Over the years, I connected with Line 6 co-founder Marcus Ryle and frequently shared my ideas for improving the Variax. Despite my critiques, I strongly believed in the concept and aimed to design a distinctive guitar that integrated advanced technology without compromising functionality. This vision led to the creation of the Dark Knight-inspired Shuriken. Collaborating with luthier Charles Cilia, and Yamaha's then head luthier, Pat Campolattano (now heading up Jackson Guitars) we brought the first Shuriken design to life. Initially, Line 6 committed to a limited run of 200 Shuriken Variax guitars for the Winter NAMM 2017. However, due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, this number quickly expanded to 400, and eventually surpassed 1000 units. Notable players like John McFee from the Doobie Brothers, YouTuber Leo Moracchioli and even the guitarist for Stephen King's band (yes, that Stephen King!) adopted the Shuriken, demonstrating its wide-ranging appeal and innovative design.

  • Despite Shuriken's success, Line 6 maintained its primary focus on their flagship Helix product line, exemplifying a common strategy in established companies. This approach, where resource allocation decisions favor proven products over newer, potentially disruptive technologies, starkly contrasts with the agility of smaller, private companies. While small firms often have the freedom to innovate rapidly in response to market shifts, larger corporations—particularly those answerable to investors—tend to prioritize risk mitigation and maximizing return on investment.Interestingly, Line 6 itself was born out of experimental innovation, leveraging technology to serve guitarists' needs in unconventional ways. However, as the company became absorbed into a larger corporate ecosystem post-acquisition, departing from high-level corporate objectives became increasingly challenging. This evolution illustrates the tension between maintaining current success and investing in future potential, often resulting in a separation between teams managing established product lines and those involved in innovation.

Through private investment, I developed a line of Shuriken guitars without Variax technology with the goal of justifying further R&D by proving the Shuriken guitar concept (i.e. guitar first, tech second and not the other way around). However, the COVID-19 pandemic bottlenecked manufacturing, causing significant delays, price increases and quality control challenges. Additionally, the Variax project was retired after key components in the Variax technology became obsolete (namely the SHARC DSP chip). Currently, the Shuriken Guitars project is on hold until an appropriate partner can meet the required manufacturing, quality control, and distribution standards. I have one prototype of each model, which I continue to use. If you’re interested in collaborating, please reach out to me here.

  • Despite its cultural impact, electric guitar has remained technologically stagnant for decades. I envision not just another guitar, but a revolutionary upgrade—a digital fusion that respects tradition while unleashing limitless sonic potential. I'm not about replacing guitars; I'm about evolving them. I'm seeking partners who share this vision: to create a universal enhancement that transforms any guitar into an instrument of the future, customisable to each player's imagination.
